Understanding your options helps you to make the best decision when it comes to senior living. With so many options available, it is important to have a good idea of what is available in your area.

Independent Living:

Independent Living Communities are “Senior Only” communities and may be comprised of houses, townhouses or apartments. It is for people who want and are able to live independently but do not want to maintain a home. Many independent living facilities offer prepared meals and provide a wide array of amenities. Costs are generally private pay.

Assisted Living:

Assisted living bridges the gap between independent living and nursing homes. Residents in assisted living centers are not able to live by themselves but do not require constant care. This type of care helps people live as independently as possible for as long as possible by offering personal care services such as help with bathing, dressing, getting to appointments and preparing meals. Monthly costs are mostly private pay or covered by long-term care insurance or Medicaid.

Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Centers:

Nursing homes provide around-the-clock care for residents who have health care needs and/or personal needs but are unable to be cared for at home or in the community. Residents may need temporary care during a period of rehabilitation or may require long-term care. Nursing homes provide care for individuals who need skilled nursing care without being in the hospital. Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) are regulated by the state and are supervised by a licensed physician who serves as the community’s medical director. The costs are generally covered by Medicare, Medicaid and/or private insurance.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Physicians:

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, also known as Physiatry, is a branch of medicine that emphasizes the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of functional disabilities of all types. Physiatry is non-surgical and non-invasive. The "whole patient" is considered in the development of a treatment plan. As part of the rehabilitation team, our Physiatrist works with other physicians, therapists, nurses and social workers to help our patients feel well, function better and return home to friends and family as soon as possible.
